Sleepless in Spring Texas: Go To Sleep and Get a Good Night’s Rest
Saturday, August 22nd, 2009How many reasons do you have not to go to sleep at night? They vary among us but a lot of the “sleep disorders” we have can be attributed to just a few simple things that need to be changed in our daily lives. Mainly diet and excercise are the two key components to getting the rem sleep you need to feel refreshed when the electronic rooster goes off for another day at living the American dream (or nightmare depending on where you work).
Simple common sense tells us if we load up on carbs and sugary snacks at 9 PM - bed time will be pushed back a couple of hours. So if it all possible do not consume these tasty tidbits after 4pm. Caffeine is another stimulant that will keep us staring at the ceiling after retiring for the night - and those damn energy drinks should be banned from the market place all together. These so called energy drinks sometimes have the equivalent of a pot of coffee in each can. I don’t know about you but I would she shaking like an alcoholic need his/her next drink if I drank one or two those.
Tobacco is another stimulant that keeps us up - I am going to say this but we all know what the real answer is about smoking. Try not to smoke any more cigarettes after five in the evening to let your body start to calm down. OK, now the real answer you will be able to go to sleep more often than not if you just quit smoking. I know of few people that can actually just putt their pack of smokes down after 5pm and call it day. So the cessation route is really the only one that is going to help.
Another enemy of dream machine is alcohol - yes you can pass out from drinking and the truth is alcoholic slumber is not rest - you will wake up feeling tired and cranky. You may want to reserve your intake of libations on the weekend if you still feel the need. Damn I am just full of good news today (not).
Getting a good physical workout non-stop for about sixty minutes is one of the best steps in sleeping the night away. Standing on your feet at your job for eight hours doesn’t count - short bursts of activity does nothing to raise a sustained heart rate to burn calories and create endurance. Plus this will wear you out and your body will need recovery (sleep).
Hope this helps you to prevent your bouts with insomnia and you can get some good restful sleep tonight.
